Is it possible to induce a hypomanic or manic bipolar episode? If yes, how?

This was the question on Quora. Answered by Daniel Siemens, worked at Oregon State Hospital "I am a retired nurse with over 40 years experience working in secure hospital psych units. I have cared for hundreds of patients in various stages of mania. Often there was one or more "triggers" for their episodes. Practically any stressor can get this off although it is often part of a cycle that recurs seasonally. For most of it is difficult to determine any precipitating event. Common circumstances that seem to set off mania include any changes in routine or setting. For instance, travel, family reunions, vacation, new job, marriage, divorce, lack of sleep or any significant event that is out of the ordinary. If someone is taking mood stabilizing drugs due to a history of Bipolar Disease, discontinuing these meds is probably the most common reason for a manic episode. Maintaining routine, getting adequate sleep and medication compliance are the most important mental health hygiene factors for stability". "The elevated mood and euphoria that are common in this state are sometimes intentionally induced because the "high" is often described as being "better than any drug" and therefore can create a kind of addiction. Like drugs it can cause disconnect with reality and a grandiose delusional system that a person in its thrall is loathe to relinquish. Unfortunately when reality returns it is usually fraught with consequences of their behavior while so afflicted".
