Taking Pain Meds Safely And Effectively

Keep medications safe.  Pain relievers or often targets of thieves, who then sell them on the street.  Keep track of how many you have taken.  Keep them in their original container in a locked cabinet.  Tell your doctor about all the medicines you are taking.  The combination of benzodiazepines (sometimes prescribed for anxiety and insomnia) and opioids is especially hazardous.  Mixing alcohol and other medications with opioids is one of the biggest risk factors for overdose and death.  To monitor you, your Dr. may want to see you frequently.  Also, order a urine test to measure opiate levels in your system.  Older adults should start with half or even one-quarter of a standard dose. The last thing is you have to be realistic.  All pain pills have risks and sometimes the pain can't be completely eliminated.
