On the average, Americans touch their phones 2,617 times a day. More than 40% of consumers said they look at their phone within 5 minutes of waking up. 50% said they check them in the middle of the night according to a 2016 survey. As distraction becomes the norm, we crave it when it does not exist. This is why so many people check their phone even as they walk down the street. 94% of Chicago pedestrians using cellphones did not see cash hanging from a tree in one experiment.
