Answer #2 for IS THERE STILL ABUSE IN PSYCHIATRIC WARDS, ASYLUMS, ETC,?

On Quaro Answered by Tosha XXXXXXXXX, Patient for 12 years, cycling regularly on and off meds "To put it bluntly, yes. As long as garbage people are in charge of the care of others there will always be abuse in psych care. That said, while it's less common than it used to be, there is still blatant abuse in medical care situations over medicating, refusal of food or showers, excessive use of restraints, removal of basic needs, straight neglect are all things I've seen as a patient or a caregiver. I've reported the people being abusive and several of them lost lincensure, but the system is still a bit broken in that most people reported just get suspended or moved to a different shift than me. Some people get into medicine because the earning potential yet they have little or no regard for the lives in which they are responsible. I spent 6 months in the hospital after a car wreck and I saw many incidents of abuse toward other patients. Many of the patients were geriatic and vulnerable if not moreso, and it's easy to see hw medical staff can abuse their power. It's unfortunate, but it happens. And will continue to happen until harsher punishments are placed on people who break oath of care."
