Answer #1 for WHY IS THERE A NEGATIVE STIGMA ASSOCIATED WITH MENTAL ILLNESS?

Answered on Quora by Thomas xxxxx, Supervising Producer "You are right to be asking these questions. "Mental health" has a negative stigma because the media demonizes it, and makes it the culprit and scapegoat in serious murder cases. What is ridiculous about this is that the people who are accused of these crimes currently have or had no history of "mental illness". Another issue that the fact people who CAN WORK have to work twice as much. If not 3 times as much, as someone 50 years ago to put food on the table and gas in the tank and other necessities. When these people see that others, who APPEAR to able to work because they don't have any PHYSICAL disability, they make the prejudiced conclusion that these people aren't truly in need of financial aid and therefore are getting "a free ride" off the taxes of the hard-earned money of taxpayers. What the public doesn't understand is that not all disabilities are PHYSICAL (can be seen on the outside), like a broken arm or leg. It's like a computer. It may look nice on the outside, but could have a virus on it that makes it inoperable."
