COMPARING MENTAL AND PHYSICAL SOCIAL SECURITY DISABILITY CONSULTATIONS Blogger:Being Sane Takes Too Much Work

A physical consultative exam can be as short as 15 minutes. The mental exam last much longer. In some cases people have complained that the physician performing the physical exam was condescending or rude. A reason for their actions could be the medical doctors who perform exams for Social Security do so to supplement their income and since consultative exams compensation rates are not high, it is often true that the only doctors who do these exams are those who do not have thriving medical practices. It is safe to say they don't have too many patients; otherwise they would not be doing this. This maybe because of their demeanor and skills. Psychologist and psychiatrist cannot afford to be rude or curt because that could impact the mental state of the person being examined. Still, it may happen but less often. Sometimes the examining doctor literally knows nothing about the claimant's medical condition. It has been reported that a degenerative spine condition was examined by a gynecologist. A licensed psychologist or licensed psychiatrist will be performing the mental examinations. From the Social Security Disability and SSI Resource Center
